Wis. GOP Sen. Johnson calls on Weiner to resign (AP)

MILWAUKEE – Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin has become the first Republican senator to call on U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner (WEE'-ner) to resign.

Johnson told ABC's "Topline" on Thursday that he wished Weiner would resign "to get that story off the front page." He says the controversy distracts from pressing economic issues.

Weiner has repeatedly said he won't step down. The New York Democrat faces pressure from both parties after he admitted tweeting sexually charged messages and photos to at least six women and lying about it.

In a recent poll of registered voters in Weiner's district, 56 percent said he should stay in office while 33 percent said he should go.

A spokeswoman for Wisconsin's other senator, Democrat Herb Kohl, said he was traveling Friday and not immediately available for comment.
